What to drink instead of water when on a diet?

I believe it. Water may not taste good. DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT IT HAS NO TASTE! Okay, fine. It doesn’t. But I only realised this a few years ago – before that, I chose shop-bought fruit juices instead of water, which wasn’t the best idea. However, a very good idea is to use the following suggestions instead of water when on a diet. If you have a problem drinking enough fluids, be sure to read the post: How to drink more water?

What to drink instead of water on a diet?
Before you think about flavoured water, understand this: FLAVOURED WATER IS NOT WATER. It is definitely closer (in terms of composition) to Coca-Cola than to pure water.

Spring water (250 ml)

0 calories
0 g carbohydrates
Flavoured water (250 ml)

61 kcal
16.75 g carbohydrates
Coca-Cola (350 ml)

105 kcal
26.5 g carbohydrates
Now that we’ve exposed the culprit, let’s move on to finding substitutes for water on a diet.

Homemade fruit water

A good way to achieve the most intense flavour is to use sparkling water. If you prefer still water, that’s no problem – just shake the bottle vigorously after soaking the fruit in water for at least 30 minutes. The flavour will be much more intense than if you used still water straight away. Pouring almost boiling water over the fruit also enhances the flavour, but then we lose many of the nutritional benefits of the fruit, and the drink itself is not as clear as in the photo above. You can prepare it in carafes, jars, water bottles or nice bottles from ordinary drinks.

A very convenient option is to prepare stuffed ice cubes :). Put fruit, mint/lemon balm leaves, edible flowers (they look very nice) into the hole and pour water over them. A very impressive method, try it at your next barbecue.

As for fruit baths, fruit is not the only thing that works for this purpose. Proven combinations for homemade flavoured waters include:

lemon, strawberries, mint, sage, optional spoonful of honey/stevia
peach, lemon, sprig of mint
orange, grapefruit (2:1 ratio)
ginger (peeled, thinly sliced), a spoonful of honey
cucumber, orange, ice cubes (tastes better)
green apple
raspberry, lemon
cucumber, ice cubes (tastes better)
strawberries, lime, mint
pineapple, mint
pear, lime, mint
watermelon, blueberries, lemon, mint (optional tablespoon of honey/stevia)
blackberries, sage
Do you drink such wonders? I am waiting for your tried and tested combinations 🙂
